Exhibition “Stepan Erzya and We” at Kuznetsky, 11

On January 14, the Erzia International Foundation took part in the opening of the exhibition “Stepan Erzia and We. Moscow sculptors at Kuznetsky, 11 “. The exhibition is organized by the Moscow Union of Artists, the Association of Moscow Sculptors and the Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts named after S. D. Erzia under the patronage of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Ministry of Culture, National Policy and Archival Affairs of the Republic of Mordovia.

The exhibition takes place in the historic hall. In summer 1954 this hall hosted the legendary Stepan Erzia’s solo exhibition after his return from Argentina. Stepan Erzia attended this exhibition. The exhibition was a bright cultural event of Moscow life. It had a difficult fate. It was closed 2 weeks after opening by order of high-ranking officials “from art” as unreliable and not meeting the standards of Soviet realism.

The 2020 exposition includes 11 works by Erzia and 2 growths of the kebracho tree and about 100 works of contemporary Moscow sculptors. Erzia Foundation has provided works from its collection such as “Self-portrait”, “Detached”, “Portrait of Horacio Quiroga”, “Man from Chaco”. Foundation specialist Alexander Tolokin restored these works.

At the opening ceremony Foundation President Mikhail Zhuravlev congratulated Erzia Mordovian Museum with 60th anniversary and presented for the museum’s collection a sketch of Mordovian landscape painting V.P. Kharlamov.

The exhibition will run until January 25 at Moscow Union of Artists on Kuznetsky 11.
